Welcome to the Big Top School of Circus Arts! The first school of circus arts in York Region. Exercise doesn’t have to be boring and repetative. In our programs students are introduced to a wide variety of circus activities. They work at their level to improve the skills they enjoy the most. The goal of our students is to work towards their personal best. We train individuals within a fun group atmosphere. Circus arts is a non-competitive activity where all students learn to achieve results without pressure or stress. Students never get bored as there is always something new and challenging to try. We have programs available for children of all ages, even adults! Check out our Program Schedules for more details on all classes.

Big Top Circus was established in 1996 as the first Circus Arts School in York Region.

Our mission is to provide a fun, safe and non-competitive environment for participants to learn new skills while increasing fitness levels
and improving self-confidence.

Big Top School of Circus Arts offers a wide variety of programs and services:

Students at Big Top are introduced to a wide variety of circus activities. They work at their own level to improve the skills they enjoy the most.

Circus skills include: juggling, unicycle, rolla bolla, circus wheel, tight wire, trampoline, swinging trapeze, swinging ladder, Silks & Aerial acts, stilts, hand balancing, acrobatics, bungee and much more. The goal of our students is to work towards their personal best and the great thing about circus arts is that there is something for every personality, ability and body type.

The program teaches balance, strength, dexterity and helps instill in children a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence. Students learn coordination, concentration, focus and perseverance. In addition, there is plenty of opportunity for communication, cooperation and team work and the students have so much fun they don’t even realize how much they are learning.

We teach children within a fun group atmosphere. Circus arts is a non-competitive activity so all students learn to achieve results without pressure or stress. Students never get bored as there is always something new and challenging to try.

Community involvement

Community involvement is an integral part of Big Top Circus Arts School. The Relay for Life, MS Walk-A-Thon, Circus for Heart and Autism Ontario are a few of the events the school has actively supported.

“York Region has been very good to me and my family.  They have welcomed us and supported our efforts to start a circus school in Newmarket.

I am just happy to give back in whatever way I can. If that means putting on a performance for a good cause,
I’m happy to do it.”

Benefits of Circus School:

1. Circus Arts equip children with life skills
The need to take risks and test themselves and the world around them is an essential part of a child’s development (by Jeanette Gonzalez in Adolescent Perceptions of their Risk-taking Behaviour,1994).
Circus Arts is a way for young people to take risks in a controlled, focused context.

2. Circus Arts improve academic performance.
Juggling activates both the left and right hand sides of our brains. Our left brain is used to process math & logic, and gets a very thorough work-out from analysis - where to aim that next throw, or where the hand should be positioned to catch it. The right brain, or creative side, is in charge of turning juggling into an art – choreographing tricks into routines, remembering to smile and performing.

3. Circus Arts help kids to deal with anxiety, frustration, inadequacy, and failure.
Circus Arts teaches young people to excel, but also to deal with failure and frustration, transforming it into a positive feeling.

4. Circus Arts help kids to develop physical skills.
Balance, coordination, flexibility, stamina, fitness and cardiovascular health, spatial awareness, weight distribution, timing, strength, reflexes, lateral awareness, agility and body awareness are all improved by participation and study of circus arts.

5. Circus Arts can improve self-esteem.
Circus arts do not exclude anyone. Any competitive aspect in circus is about challenging oneself instead of opposing others. This teaches participants to set their own goals and measure their own success.

6. Circus Arts can play a major role in children's health
Preventing childhood obesity, unhealthy eating habits, sedentary lifestyles, image-problems and anorexia.
